The assignment
They call your name from a list you did not join. The stamp says filed. The key is warmer than the room. Nobody at the counter looks up when you ask who lived here last.
Unit 4
The Place Department keeps the city housed. You do not apply. You are assigned. The paper says the unit is vacant, furnished, and yours as of this morning.
You play the walk from the counter to the apartment, and the walk back after the rooms stop matching the floor plan. The clerk has already gone home. The key still turns.
It is a third-person story in the browser. No install. The department’s copy of the building is the one you are standing in.
The night
01
They call your name from a list you did not join. The stamp says filed. The key is warmer than the room. Nobody at the counter looks up when you ask who lived here last.
02
The number on the door is the number on the file. The coat by the hook is not yours. A cup in the sink is still wet. The inventory lists the unit as empty, and the inventory is wrong in a careful way.
03
You take the key back. The front shutter is down. A light is on in the records room, and your folder is open to a page that was blank when you signed it.
Now
The counter
The file, the stamp, and the key they slide across the wood.
The apartment
The rooms you were placed in, and the things the inventory left out.
After hours
The department with the shutter down and your folder still open.
